The Welsh Government has shared an update into whether or not it will bring in a shorter summer holiday for pupils from September 2025. Under the proposed rules, which were set out in January of this year, the Welsh Government were campaigning to shorten the summer holidays by one week – making them five weeks instead of six.Wales’s previous Education Minister, Jeremy Miles, said at the time:
‘Our hope is that this will give everyone a proper rest, boosting learning and attendance once they return.’ And shortening the school summer holiday was opposed by all teaching unions and the tourism and farming industries. ‘Opinion was hugely divided on this. To ensure we get this right we need to continue listening to and engaging with schools, teachers, unions, as well as children, young people, and parents, on how best we can implement any changes in the future.’
