At just two years old, Chloe suffered two types of stroke — now she's learning to walk on her own.

In June 2022, the toddler's parents, Matt and Alicia, tried to wake her up but found she couldn't stand.Having undertaken a first aid course, Alicia knew to ask her daughter to raise her hands, but she could only lift one, prompting the Brisbane parents to call an ambulance.Since it was too big to remove entirely, a team of oncologists and neurosurgeons decided to debulk the growth instead.

"We got to go home with Chloe and we started immediate rehab because, as I guess as any parent would do, the first thing you do is start researching about stroke and recovery."To this day Chloe has about five therapy appointments each week, including hydrotherapy as well as visits to a physio, occupational therapist, and Feldenkrais specialist.

After having Chloe, the couple decided to complete first aid training "should something ever happen to either each other or our child". "We would love to see that — I think there's a misconception in the community that strokes only happen to older Australians. It's an enormous milestone for the four-year-old, because the part of her brain where the stroke occurred is responsible for communication and speech.
