People have been left scratching their heads over what the 'G' in 5G actually means - as others wonder about the difference between the various wireless technologies

Although the 1G network has been around since 1979, many mobile phone users have no idea what the 'G' actually stands for. Today, you're most likely to connect to a 4G or 5G network when using your mobile phone, meaning the internet connects almost instantly, keeping you in touch with the online world.

"Viruses cannot travel on radio waves or mobile networks. Coronavirus is also spreading in many countries that do not have 5G mobile networks. Full Fact makes clear there is no evidence that 5G is harmful to humans and it is not accelerating the spread of coronavirus." It paved the way for 2G, 3G, 4G and now G5 - with the 'G' standing for 'generation'. Following its launch in Japan, Ameritech introduced 1G to the United States in 1983, with Canada picking up on it just a few years later.
