The well-schooled NHL player always made his education a priority

His brilliant career stopping pucks for a living made him champion at the world juniors , the Olympics and World Cup and got him to the Stanley Cup final in 2021.

He told the university crowd how blessed he was to play for the Habs all those seasons, leading them into the playoffs 10 times, and said he was “incredibly proud,” whenever he had the chance to play for his country. Price played minor hockey in Wiliams Lake, 312 kilometres away from his home in Anahim Lake, and his father Jerry bought a private plane to cut short those five-hour highway trips during the winter. Jerry, a goalie in the Western Canada Junior Hockey League with Calgary and Portland, was drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in 1978 and went on to play four seasons of pro hockey.

“I spent a lifetime working at playing hockey and being a goaltender but I’ve also spent a good portion of my life just trying to be a gentleman and it’s nice to be recognized for that.” Price has Ulkatcho-Southern Carrier Indigenous heritage and his mother Lynda is chief of the Ulkatcho First Nation. She is also a UNBC graduate who earned her degree in First Nations studies.

UNBC chancellor Darlene McIntosh, a Lheidli T’enneh elder, presented Price with his honourary degree.
