Despite updating several elements of its statewide social studies curriculum, the board of education, per Politico, “left intact controversial pieces on Black history.” Specifically, middle school students are still required to learn “how slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit.” That’s right: Florida officials had a year to think it over, and decided to stick with claiming that being forced to be someone else’s property wasn’t all that bad.

” On a campaign stop, Tim Scott, the only Black Republican in the Senate, told reporters, “As a country founded upon freedom, the greatest deprivation of freedom was slavery. There is no silver lining…in slavery…. What slavery was really about separating families, about mutilating humans, and even raping their wives. It was just devastating.
