Bill Walton could've averaged 50 points per game during his stellar high school career; instead, he delighted in his teammates' successes

Bill Walton and I came upon the San Diego sports scene about the same time. Although I had worked part-time for the San Diego Union since 1964, I was just beginning my run as a full-time staff member early late in 1967 when Helix High School boys basketball coach Gordon Nash pointed out a sophomore on his junior varsity team. “When he grows into his body, that young man is going to be an excellent basketball player,” said Nash. That player was Bill Walton.

assistant coach Denny Crum attended that game. Upon returning to Westwood, Crum told Wooden: “I just saw the greatest high school player I’ve ever seen.” I have two other memories from Walton’s high school career. Before attending Helix, Walton went to Blessed Sacrament on El Cajon Boulevard. One of his teammates there was Elias Delgadillo, who then went to Castle Park. Walton was a far superior player, but Delgadillo had a move that Walton fell for every time.
