The latest National Assessment Program report in science literacy found about a third of year 6 students say they do not have science lessons every week.

Almost half of Australian year 10 students are failing to reach proficiency standards in science literacy, while about a third of final-year primary students say they do not have science lessons every week.

About one in three year 6 students nationally were taught science less than once a week. In Victoria, 14 per cent of students said they never did science lessons. “Achievement in science literacy did not change significantly for year 6 students since 2006 or for year 10 students since 2018,” the report stated.The gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous students remains large. Only 34 per cent of Indigenous students in year 6 and 28 per cent in year 10 attained the proficient standard.

“In primary there is also a lack of opportunities to do hands-on science lessons and experiments,” she said.explicit maths instruction in senior years and deepen the study of climate science.
