Legislature News

If at least two of his candidates win on Tuesday, Gov. Greg Abbott will be almost assured of getting his school voucher bill through the GOP-led Legislature.

Coming off the heels of a holiday weekend, voters in rural Texas will decide six Republican primary runoff elections Tuesday, and with them the possible fate of Gov. Greg Abbott’s school voucher plan. This year, Abbott spent millions and crisscrossed the state trying to oust a group of nearly two dozen House Republicans who voted to block his plan to provide public taxpayer dollars for private school tuition and expenses.

Gov. Abbott goes door-to-door in bid to oust anti-voucher Republicans in upcoming runoff election After the March primary, when seven of Abbott’s favored candidates won outright, the Republican governor said the Texas House was just one vote away from a pro-voucher majority. Even proponents of traditional public schools who had lobbied hard against the proposal struck a tone of tempered resignation.

Gov. Greg Abbott’s fight for Texas school vouchers poised for victory after GOP primary Ahead of the March primaries, the pro-public education Charles Butt Foundation PAC spent millions supporting candidates who’d pledged to oppose private school vouchers, but their spending was ultimately dwarfed by Abbott, who boasted a record-breaking $6 million donation from a Pennsylvania billionaire TikTok investor.
