‘I was put in a school isolation booth more than 240 times'

Image caption

The teenager, who has autism, had no direct teaching and ate her lunch in the room, away from friends. Her mother,"Philippa", estimates that her daughter was placed in an isolation booth at her secondary school more than 240 times in total - beginning in year seven but becoming more frequent in years 10 and 11.

On one occasion, Sophie said:"I begged the teachers to ring my Mum as I didn't want to be alone any more. After she tried to take her own life, Sophie returned to school but said she would"dread each day" when she was again placed in isolation."I feel as though isolation rooms should be banned."Due to the amount of stress and trauma throughout school I now suffer with depression and anxiety.

This is akin to torture. Truym cruel and unusual punishment and the people involved should be ashamed of themselves

Should have expelled you because it didn’t work and you must have been a real disruption to others.

Would have been interesting to have details from the school’s perspective.

Nothing new here. Just the UK school system being one of the worst I've ever witnessed. And it shows in the comments, too.

Imagine thinking 'it'll work the 240th time round!'

Ok, tell us also what your behaviour issues were,

Congratulations!

And on the 241st time, she got the message?

Once again the teachers are as thick as shit... Imagine treating an autistic child this way.. These teachers and their superiors should be sacked and then face some sort of prosecution

She did not do jack to help just expected the school to babysit her child with special needs. What is your solution to a disruptive child? Stop the class for everyone else? Just be reasonable.

The emotional reaction to this is understandable. However my fellow parents you fail to grasp something key here. These are not special schools. You can't expect every teacher to be trained to handle each specific need of your special child. There is blame on the parent here too.

THIS YOUNG GIRL NOW NEEDS TO SUE THE CONSERVATIVE GOVERNMENT FOR ABUSE, REMEMBER NOBODY IS ABOVE THE LAW!!

Isolation shouldn't be viewed as a punishment, some kids are easily distracted and some kids act up when they're bored and distract others. Isolation should be explained to them as a tool to help them focus on their work

'Didn't react to change well'. She. Had. Autism. Also, if she's in isolation thay much, did the school not think to get the parent in to ask why this might happen?

Should have behaved then

This is simple. She is not a victim and the expectation should be “BEHAVE”.

She did everything except change her behaviour. Also, did the mother not talk to her, to not find out she was in isolation?

My beautiful son Zac was once held in a similar booth for about 2 hrs & by the time his mother picked hi up he was an emotional wreck....he is also autistic & non-vocal. Work on helping the little girl rather than torturing her and at the same time dismantle the booth. vibaya

That’s psychological abuse. Simples

Ridiculous, things need to be talked about and dealt with, not shut in a box 🤨

The answer is not to mix kids with autism and other disorders with mainstream. You can’t allow 1 child to impact a class of 20+

Anyone who had their learning disrupted by this individual should be the ones complaining. Everyone is entitled to an education, however some are being denied this right because of the disruption caused by people like her!

Obviously school is not for you.

0 tolerance policy in schools has proven not to work. All schools in the UK use this form of punishment rather than appropriate consequences.I totally disagree with it and not surprised by this.On the other hand, schools are oversubscribed and underfunded. Often lack good leaders

So behave.

Did the school not have a trained counsellor on site?

Least she learnt how to count

自閉症の子供が学校に行き、友達とと交流機会もなく、孤立ブースに入れられる???…学校に行く必要性があるとは思えません…

SNP have closed many autistic units and cut special needs placements, meaning this will happen more in Scotland, disrupting the learning of ALL children. Inclusion doesn't work for everyone and there needs to be better steps in place for when it isn't working.

We merely need to establish how successful these booths are overall. I'm sure they can be improved upon. But if the concept has positive outcomes overall , then other arrangements should be made for certain individuals.

This should be in some better way. Punishment should be converted into reward instead of isolation ask them to do meditation

She learnt to count

Wow! The ignorant comments are unbelievable. This girl is autistic, probably with a PDA profil. If she was disruptive, chances are she wasn't coping in the classroom, was overwhelmed and needed support not punishment.

These head lines always send shock waves ..... try working in a school for the full picture!!!

'Due to the amount of stress and trauma throughout school I now suffer with depression and anxiety.' Perhaps she should reflect on how her behaviour impacted on her peers and members of staff.

Shows some never learn, and just born disruptive, more than likely, an off spring of Britain's cup cake members

My son spent several years at jnr school having classes constantly disrupted by a boy with Aspergers. This boy would stand on desks shouting he was going to rape the teacher (age 10!). He also throttled my son till he passed out. It’s not just about one child but all children.

As usual, the story of one isolated incident (no pun intended) is used to generalise about schools across the UK. My school would not have treated an autistic pupil this way, and neither would the vast majority of other schools

From the comments, I can only assume you didn’t notice she is autistic and none of you making snide comments have autistic children in your family.

Wasn’t enough obviously

LandSlide

Prob the best place for you and other pupils

As usual with these stories you have to read down the piece to find out what was really going on which is 'she reacted badly to a change in teachers, classroom and routine' which means she was disruptive, but 'Disruptive pupil put in isolation' does not make for good click-bait.

Well i guess you were bad..

Why do schools have 'isolation booths'? That sounds like solitary confinement in prison.

That it? Amateur
