Two years ago, Uvalde, a city that few people knew outside Texas by name and even fewer knew where to find on a map, became synonymous with the gun violence epidemic in America and in my home state of Texas. I remember the day clearly. My 10-year-old daughter, Alexandria “Lexi” Rubio, had just received the Good Citizen Award and been recognized for receiving all A’s when a gunman entered her classroom at Robb Elementary School with an AR-15 rifle.
The reality is that states with weaker gun laws have higher rates of gun violence — and Texas continues to lead the nation in the number of people killed in both mass shootings and school shootings. At my core, I believe that we can create a better tomorrow if we don’t forget why we must fight so hard for it. And I won’t ever forget because I’m fighting for Lexi. I will honor her with action.
