From calling them 'buddy room drills' to making school psychologists available during the exercises, schools are trying to protect students — physically and mentally.

Some schools do not notify teachers and students in the days beforehand, based on state laws thatthe drills to be conducted without prior warning. Once a drill starts, administrators might announce over the loudspeaker that it’s just an exercise.

He discouraged simulating real shootings, which may look very different in reality than they did during the simulation. But the district recognizes some children will still have anxiety during the drills, Tornatore said, so school guidance counselors, social workers and psychologists follow up with students afterward. There is also sensory support and occupational support in classrooms for students with special needs during the drills, such as giving a student who tends to feel anxious a ball to squeeze.

All this does is accepts school shootings as part of life. How about doing something to stop them instead?

Classroom teachers are also impacted and traumatized by the fact that they are literally responsible for the lives of their students.

This is extremely sad. School shootings didn’t begin until after I graduated, so it’s going to be interesting to see the impact these drills have on generations as I age. I can only imagine what the drills will be like in 40 years. 😞

And hire more scientists to teach science, ffs.

Dumb, on all sides. In a crisis, we default to our minimum level of training. The first drill wxmy students saw kids hiding under desks like it was a tornado drill. I walked them through a few scenarios and turned it into a physics lesson. Train the teachers. And pay them more.

Wasn’t like this when I was a kid. Too bad we’re constantly pushing God out of our society. Does anyone wanna go back to loving God and not so much violence
