Tear Gas News

Training,Students,California

Tear gas used during Tuesday's training wafted over to Portola Elementary School in San Bruno, according to authorities.

Nearly two-dozen students at a California elementary school were sickened Tuesday due to a nearby sheriff's office tear gas exercise, according to authorities.

"Both irritants are commonly used by law enforcement agencies as a non-lethal option for subduing combative and violent suspects," SFSO wrote in the press release. "Unfortunately, gas from inside the structure drifted outside to a nearby elementary school campus where 20 students and one adult reported experiencing symptoms including burning sensations in the eyes, nose, and throat," the press release reads. "This is an unprecedented situation that we take very seriously."
