Worsening child poverty harms learning, say teachers

More than 8,600 NEU members from across the UK responded to an online survey between March 20 and April 3.

Another reported that poverty was not necessarily confined to families where no one works but also affects homes with"parents working hard in jobs but still not able to get the basics". A teacher commented:"The rich children show off and those struggling with finances are really noticed by the other children."Older pupils are sometimes unable to afford course text books or calculators, and providing electronic copies doesn't help pupils from homes without access to computers or the internet, the survey found.

If a child's upbringing is based on genetics and environment. If you degrade society isn't it logical that you degrade our children?

Funny how the Princes seek PR by hijacking the rise in depression, but never mention inequality.

Cost of living is to high, it’s not the families on benefits struggling, they get free school meals. It’s the family’s that earn just a little to much to receive help that struggle. Cost of living is to high. Lack of help with childcare is crippling. childpoverty sad

Lazy parenting to blame. Come on, I grew up in real poverty, but, I always had breakfast before school and despite being the youngest in my class I was always getting As, as we're my siblings. Why do we refuse to hold parents responsible anymore?

BBC news why are you not covering the french riots 15weeks not a single thing

Any documentary about London in XIX century shows you this

I've cut out takeaways, i don't have luxuries, I don't smoke drink or take drugs. We work to give the CEOs luxuries.

My kid always has the clothes, the shoes, the school uniform, the food and drink she needs they also have a proper bed time routine and always goes to school eager to learn. I get guilty about buying a £3 pair of leggings for myself because once all my UC is gone it's gone.

Parents need to be blamed. They have latest tech, fashion, coke habit, etc, but can barely afford a meal for some reason. We need to start promoting condom ads too. The ladies love a good dick, but are a bit dense when it comes to parenting

A banana costs literally 10p. Why on earth are children being sent to school hungry? The more the government do, the less parents will do.

My mum did without to feed us!! Today we always pay her back!!!

Neglect! ! Feed children not your sky and mobile bills!!!!

Time to wake up, whoever is making these crucial decisions?

dannyrampling jessphillips Is no Useless eater?

Are parents priorities wrong in these situations? No child should go hungry if the focus is on family. Is it social standing that causes parents to misguide there resources?

The problem is neglect.

This is what the PM should be dealing with these issues, SaveOurSchools Poverty Neglect it's 2019 and we are going backwards

People having too many kids.

Part of problem is good manufacturing jobs have been going for 30 plus years which would of payed half decent wages plus pensions. Replaced with what cheapest labour best . Unless you go to university then still not necessarily on a good wages.

Neanwhile the Royal charities are sending off money to Africa

It's always been the case whereby some disadvantaged students go to school hungry, tired etc.learning isn't happening mostly because of bad parenting and low quality teaching. Some of these parents struggling will put their mobile phone bill before the food on the table for kids

Times are very hard!!! We both work and it's tough but our children come first tidy shoes and uniforms and we'll fed..we don't drink and party like some in the school and their children have holes in their shoes and there mum's pop up on FACEBOOK having a drink and bite!!!!

No 💩

Sitting in front of the TV and playing games on a console all day harms learning

It's all the EU's fault

MichaelRosenYes Stating the bleeding obvious...

Immigration has made it ten times worse, but the EU BBC won’t mention this.

That has nothing to do with it. Leftie teachers are the main cause of children not learning as they are not tsught the three Rs anymore ,it's all about diversity LGBT and gender change

This is disgraceful - what is being done about it?! Brexit won't help, it'll just cause more harm with even less resources for these families. Billions have already been wasted on Brexit & the powers that be are totally consumed by it, whilst neglecting urgent important issues.

We will become as stupid as Duncan Smith. er impossible!!

Bears defecate in tree-laden areas Ex-Pope makes up excuses for kiddie-fiddling clergy BBC is stuffed with failed Tories

If you arent financially stable enough to have and raise children then dont have them. Having children is a privilege not a right and your responsibility to raise not the govt. People are too quick to pop out another baby then stick their hand out to see what they can get.

Although I agree with the first statement about this in the brief, it’s not just noisy homes and too little food. There are some shocking teachers out there still protected by colleagues.Parents too busy working, many because they want to n not spending sufficient time with kids

Enjoyed the family tax credit from 2003 and having to work for it now, adjusting is difficult to some. As couple worked only 16 hours now has to 37 hours to get that money is hard , about time that labour crap policy changed to relieve middle income some less tax

and vici versa - the Establishment need to make sure they will have enough cheap labour to exploit in the future - so consider this an Investment in growth

If child are hungry they cant focus, it's so simple almost as simple as not investing in imaginary ferry company, we are too busy wasting our money on magic beans to care about our children

Investigate, report to social services. Not all children tell the truth

Not in the Tories world, We are giving millions to schools etc more lies .

The fact any government even accounts for ANY statistic of poverty is abhorrent! 1% child poverty is truly disgusting, while Westminster pay themselves richly, the archaic Lords system funding, billions on Nuclear defence for a country our size. Poverty should be zero tolerance!

MichaelRosenYes Ya think...BBC.. say teachers...no doubt you will find some fool who thinks otherwise..and put them on TV on a loop!

The sooner we get rid of the tories the better they are main reason why so many people arw in poverty, homeless, kids going without.. ukiptogetmynxtvote

Sadly a lot of this is down to bad parenting. The amount of kids who’s parents have decent income going to school without getting washed or with shoes that are to small etc is disgusting. These type can’t even be bothered to make packed lunches

Cos people are trying to keep up with the cost of everything, due to greedy bosses. People work to keep the big bosses in huge homes. bbcbreakfast need to wake up to see what is happening.

Child poverty is made to look worse by shoddy parenting. I see it at my kids school daily. Kids unwashed, dirty clothes, poor hygiene and not fed. Mum has an iphone, though. Pops to spoons for brekky most days with a quick run through primark before lunch.

The british people deserve better. This cruel vindictive tory government rebrand poverty!! And mind you this is getting worse in the future!!

Investigate the parents and see which ones are smoking and drinking alcohol before feeding their kids and then deal with the issue at source!

Surely the issue is that worsening poverty should not be happening...end of

My nephew worked in a nursery he saw the so called poverty everyday. Not because the parents had no money mainly from benefits but from the want of having false nails, smoking and drinking. So obviously that's more important

I agree that government policies are partly to blame, but when some parents are willing to spend money on alcohol and cannabis, rather than feed and clothe their kids, how can we solve the problem?

Businesses aren't helping with child poverty. They are making it worse. With society changing, work patterns change. One day I will have to change my career, as they push to get rid of night shifts, meaning a morning for me would start 2am! How do you sleep at 5pm with a child!

What else do the government expect to happen? capitalism doesn’t work, time to put people before money!

The research supporting the theory that a hungry child struggles to concentrate, problem solve & learn is very well established over many years. That teachers are noting an increase in this in a country like the UK is utterly shameful & highlights the damage austerity has done.

Ov just watched the interview on this morning with the people that done the survey! Omg once again bbc actually defending the government on this, absolutely shocking never seem to amaze me the bbc was disgusting, shame on you bbc

this cruel vindictive tory government response-rebrand poverty-absolute poverty-there a shower or political criminals, we the people deserve better.

Education needs to change. Children need to be taught money management, basic diet ideas and cooking, to be able to cope in the adult world.

Poor children going to school thirsty. Thirsty? Water from the tap is free!

Child poverty is flat over the past decade plus

There is no excuse for children turning up school without breakfast. That's down to lazy parenting. A bowl of porridge is one of the cheapest breakfast cereals you can buy. If you have children, be responsible.

We can’t tackle this from only one end , like examining only the causes of “poverty” and lack of social and economic mobility. We must if we dare look at , accept & promote which fosters exactly the opposite 🤔 and risk the labels 🏷

*Worseserer

Maybe if women didn't always baby trap guys into unwanted kids their babies would be well planned and taken care of better, everyone knows half the girls in UK get knocked up as a career choice.

Very sad. But poverty alone cannot be blamed. Lack of bedtime routine. Money wasted on trash. Trash raised to status of 'must have'. Marketing marketing ....

Get rid of the welfare state and minimum wage laws and I guarantee you’d see a lot more people making money

Zero hour contracts . Minimum wage. Universal credit.

This shouldn't be happening in the 21st but Define poverty? If parents cant feed their children then seriously folk, should not be to having them!

Can you report on this please. I know you cover up things. But really your becoming a joke that is not funny

Schools charging extortionate prices for uniforms. How they look is more important than education...🤔🤔🤔

When the left wants the state to be the parents and the result is the destruction of the family unit don't be surprised that children ultimately end up falling through the cracks in the system.

In other news, houses on fire likely to be damaged, report finds.

Their is no poverty according to the Tories, local elections coming soon, let them know what you think

One of the many prices to pay for austerity. Ending this political choice now would be nine years too late!

Jacob Reese Mogg and his chums want us back in his time . Back to rich mill owners and work houses. Its time this inequality was dealt with. And for his faults the only person talking about this is Corbyn.

Maybe we should use the foreign Aid budget 14 billion and rising that no one voted for we give away each year

When has the BBC ever cared about children, they stuck up for Clinton and Saville

Yes I agree, but why do the majority of schools insist on very expensive uniforms, that have to be purchased from named suppliers. Surely a school badge and tie would surfice with black blazer white blouse or shirt.

Worsening BBC standards and bias creates fake news!

Those in your picture are clearly well cared for - the real evidence too touchy for BBC?

Try telling that to the government. Next thing will be a return of the work house, schooling system.

Watch out, UK. You'll end up a nation of overweight dunces like America if you don't pay attention to education.

Time to put em to work so they can get out of poverty then?

Council house kids brought up on ration books, no central heating, double glazing or phones - went to Grammar school - parents cared for them on a shoestring. Blame rubbish parents & absent fathers!

Any Brexit will undoubtedly make the UK and its people poorer to some degree Si issues such as child poverty will become worse UK significantly worse off under all Brexit scenarios – official forecast
