ABC analysis of the Group of Eight universities' financial statements shows that international students were their most profitable source of income barring government grants.

International students make up the largest single source of income for many universities, excluding government grants.Australia's Treasurer says the government will negotiate arrangements to allow universities to continue accepting international students.

Each annual report covers the 2023 calendar year, except for the University of Sydney, Australian National University, and the University of NSW, for which the recent reports cover 2022. The University of Sydney was the most reliant on international student money, which made up 44 per cent of its entire revenue stream in 2022.

The Australian government announced last week it would create powers to cap international student numbers with the aim of reducing pressure on housing and migration. " trying to crack down on international students and linking it to the housing crisis when actually 84 per cent of these students go back home."Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers said the government had set aside extra funding for universities in the Federal Budget 2024.
