A 'hypersensitive' Japanese academic who tried to sue a British university for racism after her university boss told her she liked sushi has had her case thrown out by a tribunal judge.
It meant the culture and linguistics expert's claims of racial discrimination and harassment against the School of Oriental and African Studies in London were thrown out. Following their first meeting, the hearing was told Prof Sato-Rossberg told a colleague she thought Prof Ozanne would be biased because she 'was not British and was a woman and BAME'.
'If Prof Claire Ozanne wished to make conversation, we had many commonalities through our work and professional academic endeavour,' she added. Asking for her to be replaced as her manager, the tribunal heard she said: ' tries to suppress my voice, the voice of a woman of color' before later claiming she had exhibited 'racist microaggression' towards her.
'The Tribunal concluded that had decided, from the outset, that Ozanne would be biased because was not British and was a woman and BAME.'The Tribunal considered that, as a result of this preconception, was predisposed to find fault with Ozanne and to see race discrimination in interactions with her, when there was none.'
