Dover Area School District's proposed policies spark debate on gender identity and sportsThe Dover Area School District introduced two new controversial policies at their board meeting on Tuesday night. In it, a student’s name, sex, or gender identity will have to match their legal name and sex that is on their birth certificate.
This means that teachers would be instructed to refer to a student by their legal name and use the pronouns that appear in the student’s official record. The school board refused to comment on their stance, but in the policy it says the goal is to “provide reasonable accommodation in both directions when such interests come into tension” and to respect the “right of parents to direct the upbringing of their children.
There are some exceptions though, including allowing male students who have not begun puberty to play on female teams as long as they have a doctor’s note. One person stated, “Individual rights and freedoms are important for all, including any transgender student who may experience scrutiny at home. School may be their only safe space and to take that away is absurd and negligent.”“I just want to say I support the new board,” said another person.
