The January cold snap’s classroom crisis produced a report that spells trouble in light of how Texas funds its schools, superintendent says.

The San Antonio Independent School District expects it will need to spend at least $250 million on heating, cooling and ventilation improvements to avoid future weather mishaps like the district-wide shutdown during a bitter freeze in mid-January. It’s going to take time and a better funding outlook for public schools in Texas, officials said while discussing a report on the “2024 HVAC Crisis,” which left many classrooms unusable during the Jan.

’s top performers getting fast-tracked to UTSA Alejandra Lopez, president of the San Antonio Alliance of Teachers and Support Personnel, said the union will work with the district to foster favorable working conditions. But she said teachers and support staff are suffering from “cumulative fatigue” from a difficult school year and may look at other career options this summer.
