Georgetown University undergraduate students will vote Thursday on a referendum that would create a new fee to honor the descendants of the 272 slaves the university sold in 1838.
The fee will initially be $27.20 to honor the 272 slaves sold by Georgetown"in recognition of their involuntary role in the founding and preservation of our University." If a majority of Georgetown students vote in favor of the referendum, it does not guarantee it will pass, Maya Moretta, a sophomore and member of GU272 Advocacy Team, told News4. The Board of Trustees would still need to approve the measure.
Recently, universities across the U.S. have been acknowledging their ties to slavery, including American University.
nbcwashington Holy shit ! Glad I'm not Jewish.
nbcwashington At the expense BillCosby and these rulings now slave labor and profits derived from ADOS need to be addressed Georgetown CXSLtd Aetna lehmanbrothers assets AIGinsurance nscorp CocaColaCo TiffanyAndCo JNJGlobalHealth made money using or derived from slave labor
mitchellreports nbcwashington Get the hell out of that school. Not a penny.
nbcwashington I’m not fond of the students paying this fee. The school should take it up with their hidden profits.
nbcwashington That is absolutely stupid!
nbcwashington F--KING stupid Georgetown should pay it. NeverHappening 🚨
mitchellreports nbcwashington What Andrea, just a retweet, not a like? Where do you stand on this? And don’t try and hide behind “journalists aren’t supposed to have opinions” BS. You do it every day with Trump
nbcwashington As long as it's the students, not us parents.
nbcwashington So how would the descendants prove that they are relatives and how would they collect the monies. Or would they just use the Elizabeth Warren method?
nbcwashington How about the University just pay for their wrong doings instead of passing it on to someone else. screwgeorgetown
mitchellreports nbcwashington Disgraceful and truly unAmerican
nbcwashington 🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕
mitchellreports nbcwashington Then you can mail the check to the masoleum co., to purchase them for ancestors. They built the wealth earned not one dime. Minimum they should have masoleums
mitchellreports nbcwashington All the Hollywood crowd can try to come to grips with their white guilt this is beautiful please send your college students to Georgetown u will all sleep better at night and u can write a nice yearly check!
nbcwashington I would pull my child out !!!!😡😡😡
RonaldKlain nbcwashington Will the students also be issued little red books like in the Chinese cultural revolution
RonaldKlain nbcwashington Why can't Georgetown, which actually sold the slaves, pay this out of the appx $60,000 it gets from each student each year, instead of passing it on to the students?
mitchellreports nbcwashington Oh yes. Pass it on to the students. Maybe use some endowment money instead of sticking it the kids.
RonaldKlain nbcwashington Actually, I think it would be more appropriate for the Jesuit province that governs Georgetown to pony up this fee. That would show they're serious about 'service to others,' which the Jesuit university I taught at for 22 years was eager to promulgate as an ideal
mitchellreports nbcwashington They better check to see if their decendents owned slaves cause only 2% of the population did way back!
mitchellreports nbcwashington They could get the entire amount from the Vatican.
nbcwashington Not for nothing but... Why isn't the University endowment coughing up this $? I worked in higher ed for 25+ years & students already get socked with plenty of fees. Enough is enough. THEY didn't sell any slaves.
nbcwashington Here is a thought instead of passing the cost on to student and their families why doesn’t this school take some off the price or take out of the gigantic endowment. The nerve spinning this like they are doing you a service
nbcwashington Universities are creating new slaves by changing sky high fees and now want exploit students further to pay for past crimes of the university.
nbcwashington Not to be rude, but, I'd bet most people who would try to claim a piece of the reparation pie not only can't trace their ancestry back to slaves, most of them don't even know who their grandparents are. Free money just for being Black? Hoo, boy! This is gonna be fun to watch. 😏
nbcwashington 'However the University has no plans to offer financial payments to those sexually abused by priests affiliated with the university. President John DeGoia defended the action saying helping slave descendants would be considered 'more woke' and would get better media coverage' 😡
nbcwashington Total BS.
nbcwashington
nbcwashington Give me a break....ridiculous
nbcwashington This is crazy stupid. We should learn from the past, not pay for it as a form of weird white privilege but my family never owned slaves nor were we enslaved so maybe I will never get it.
nbcwashington How is this current students responsibility?
nbcwashington .. . . .WHY DO THE STUDENTS HAVE TO PAY THIS, half of them were not even born in 1838. . . . .actually none of them were born then?
nbcwashington Whaaaaaaat!
nbcwashington Smart students would go elsewhere.
nbcwashington Never!! Never will I pay for something I had no control over. In fact my family NEVER owned slaves. NEVER!!!
nbcwashington Why must the students pay for the Universities 'errors' of the past ?
