The subject of The Kindergarten Teacher may feel a tad pretentious — never more so than when Lisa chastises her teenage children for bypassing intellectualism and creativity for weed and smartphones, and attempts to coax her Instagramming daughter into using a film camera.
But occasionally, Colangelo pricks painfully at a sour, epidemic force — the general sense in society that art is unimportant, devoid of real-world value. Jimmy's poetry is remarkably, at times breathtakingly beautiful — composed in real life by contemporaries Kaveh Akbar and Ocean Vuong with a simple, almost infantile syntax that runs knee-deep in metaphor, making Lisa's infatuation all the more plausible.
That is, in fact, the movie's real knack: its ability to concoct creepy, marginally unethical circumstances, and then to justify them with, of all things, the pursuit of beauty. And though the film dedicates almost its entire runtime to the articulation of this conflict to no particular resolution, Colangelo's exaltation of poetry — with its power to move, captivate, and instigate borderline-criminal acts — makes the experience worthwhile.
