Approximately 60 members of Rutgers University’s Class of 2024 stood up and exited the school’s 258th Commencement at SHI Stadium in Piscataway. Many of the protesters wore keffiyehs, the traditional Middle Eastern headdress popular among pro-Palestinian campus activists.
The audience was largely silent and the Rutgers Glee Club continued with the program and began singing “The Bells Must Ring,” the Rutgers Scarlett Knight Fight Song that includes the chorus “fight, fight, fight.”The walkout followed a large pro-Palestinian encampment on the Rutgers-New Brunswick campus that was set up by students demanding the university divest its investments from companies tied to Israel.
Attendees braved a steady rain with smiles, pulling on ponchos over their graduation robes and Sunday best. Rutgers-Camden will hold its ceremony Tuesday at the Freedom Mortgage Pavilion in Camden with commencement speaker Brian Bridges, the state’s secretary of higher education. “Those of us on stage understand what you had to navigate during your time,” said Holloway. “Do not let the challenges of the moment extinguish your flame.”
