While many students are asked to bring their own devices into schools across the state, some are resisting the trend to have iPads or laptops in lessons.

When Kristen Lizzio started teaching at Sydney Grammar, she was surprised to find a total absence of screens and digital devices in the classrooms.

“There is plenty of data on how distracting tech is, and the hours children and adults waste on it. It is good to tune out from all of that and just focus on learning,” Lizzio says.found “readers may be more efficient and aware of their performance when reading from paper compared to screens” and a new studySydney Grammar principal Richard Malpass says he is a “firm believer” in having students handwrite notes and assignments.

“There’s an expectation that teenagers, even children as young as eight or nine, can maintain a sustained focus on the teacher when they’ve been given this ultimate tool of distraction.”The school, which charges $45,987 a year, did not have a separate tech levy as part of annual fees, Malpass said. Laptops are generally used by students for specific tasks such as an assessment, research, a major project or for working on a group presentation.

Approaches vary across all sectors and schools on how digital devices are used in classrooms. Many public and private schools have a BYOD policy, in which parents are asked to supply Apple laptops or iPads from primary school.
