Texas Tech agrees to stop using race in medical school admissions, becoming the first to bow to pressure from Trump administration

By Laura Meckler Laura Meckler Reporter covering national education policy and trends, and the Education Department Email Bio Follow April 9 at 2:22 PM Texas Tech University has agreed to stop using race when considering applicants to its medical school, bowing to pressure as the Trump administration campaigns to curtail the use of affirmative action in education.

The department’s Office for Civil Rights has investigations underway into the use of race in admissions at Yale and Harvard universities. Those cases question whether Asian American applicants are being discriminated against in admissions. The original complaint against Texas Tech was filed in 2005 by Roger Clegg of the Center for Equal Opportunity, which opposes affirmative action. The complaint was prompted by the university’s announcement that it planned to consider race in admissions, Clegg said.

Only one race the human race.

Well, if IS Texas...

Then they should not require applicants to list it or provide a photo until after, they are accepted.

They probably didn’t want diversity in the first place

So will the White Only medical school also make segregated water fountains available. President Jim Crow thinks we should.

And that’s why TT lost the National title

'I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.' ~Martin Luther King, Jr.

Using race is discriminatory to those not in the chosen race in need of handout. Academically qualified should be only criteria. I’m sick of the liberal logic.

Now Im glad they Lost!!!!

morgfair I see you, Stephen Miller, I see you.

First to 'bow to pressure from Trump administration' to be race-blind. Oh, the humanity! Can you imagine! Promoting race-blind competence. Can this administration go any lower? WaPo's feelings are seriously hurt.

deray They couldn't be number one in basketball so they chose this. Trash.

Bow to pressure? Are you fu*king kidding me?

Never should have to begin with. Merit based only

Just awful

Lol oh you mean that just because of your color you don’t get special treatment as a Native American I never thought that was fair to any one anyway good for you Texas Tech. You Go!

Now I'm really glad they got beat by Virginia.

Good.

So if they aren’t going to use race to determine admissions what are they going to base their admissions on?

Wait... but shouldn’t college applications not be reliant on race, but on academics? Genuine question. I don’t understand how this is a horrible thing.

The NCAA gods continue to smile regarding their loss.

Thank G-d, too late for so many whose hopes and dreams of going to medical school were destroyed thanks to affirmative action.

Good!

Any meritocracy will be perceived as racist to the left, either based on test bias, economic disadvantage, etc. let the runner race, if there is a true tie, then adjust the mosaic of a workforce as you desire.

I'm glad they lost last night.

Yeah, they only use race in basketball admisssions.

These are the Modern Day Christians

Now I’m glad they lost
