In fact, it was a similar situation in which Gempesaw first turned down Mullin. According to several people with knowledge of what happened, Mullin wanted to hire former Rutgers head coach Mike Rice as an assistant last summer. Rice had not been in college coaching since 2013 when Rutgers fired him after embarrassing video came to light of him intimidating his players during practice.

Several names were discussed for a replacement, and a source said one of them was Andy Borman, executive director of the New York Renaissance, which has a basketball travel team. It was unclear if Cragg was pushing Borman, who is a Duke graduate. Mullin made it clear he wanted someone with major Division I experience to fill Abdelmassih's slot.
