Snipers staged on top of Ohio State University buildings and cops on the ground arrested 36 people on April 25.

Ohio State University President Ted Carter addresses the Ohio Senate Workforce and Higher Education Committee on Wednesday, May 8, 2024.COLUMBUS, Ohio – Speaking Wednesday to state lawmakers, the president of Ohio State University defended the school’s actions toward pro-Palestinian protesters in late April, when snipers staged on top of campus buildings and cops on the ground arrested 36 people.

The April 25 arrests at OSU occurred after students set up an encampment on the South Oval. Protests have erupted on university campuses around the country in response to the war between Israel and Hamas that broke out in October. Carter was called to testify before the committee about the university’s budget request and diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. Ohio State is by far the largest university in Ohio and is among the largest universities in the country, with more than 60,000 students on its Columbus campus.

Carter had described programs at OSU that help students who are the first generation in their families to attend college be successful in higher education and at OSU in particular. A College of Engineering program connects first- and second-year students to mentors. Another program provides academic, social and financial support to students struggling during their first year at OSU.
