The tests, aimed at children as young as six, take place in primary schools across the country each May.
Over the years there have repeated calls to axe the tests, from some parents and teachers who believe they have made schools into exam factories and turned children against education.Back in 2016, Let Our Kids Be Kids spearheaded a school strike day, urging parents to keep their kids off for a day a show of defiance against the exams.
How are they marked? Pupils are given scaled SATs scores - teachers are given conversion tables to calculate these from the actual number of marks they achieve. They'll give an overall score based on the SATs as well as class work and teacher observations. Each pupil is given a raw score and a scaled score - you'll probably just be told their scaled score - and will be told whether or not they have achieved the national standard .A scaled score of 100 or more means that the child has met the expected standard in each test. A scaled score of 99 or less means they haven't reached the government-expected standard. Maximum score possible is 120 and the minimum is 80.
