Lanier High School will close at the end of the month.MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Sydney Lanier High School will close its doors forever at the end of the school year.
The school on Court Street opened its doors in 1929, making it the first coeducational school in Montgomery. Four decades later, a ruling by a federal judge integrated Montgomery Public Schools,Students, teachers and staff are soaking up the last days by reminiscing on the past and looking forward to the future.Harper had ties to the school for over a decade as a former school resource officer.
Beginning in August, Lanier students will attend Carver High School, which brings mixed emotions to those who graduate in 2025. “Maybe they should keep it open one more year so I could at least graduate here,” 11th grader Ariyanna Bar said. Barr said she will miss being at Lanier but also embraces the “new opportunities and new experiences.”Lanier’s final graduating class will have its commencement ceremony on May 15.Copyright 2024 WSFA.
