Conservative Commentator Charlie Kirk appeared on the UW campus Tuesday amidst heightened tensions, and just a few hundred yards away
Kirk encouraged people to debate him about vaccines and foreign policy, and a couple hundred people stood around to watch the spectacle, which was rather calm at 1:30 p.m.However, a few university police officers and security were seen near the borders of the Quad, and temporary fencing was seen in place, but students and faculty continued to stroll without obstruction through the popular campus spot.
Classes continued even with the dual distractions. UW Graduate Student Paul Kim stopped to observe Kirk's "debate" outside the Husky Union Building, and called it "sad". It's just like a guy trolling for reactions, trying to boost his social media profile," said Kim, "It'd be nice if we could have a civil discourse that functioned better and where the point wasn't to try to make these like highlight worthy, Instagram worthy moments. But that's, not what the social media algorithms reward.
