Prospective faculty members at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology will no longer have to submit a diversity statement when applying for jobs at the school, a school spokesperson told The National Desk Monday.
A diversity statement is intended to highlight “how a candidate will contribute to an institution's approach to diversity, equity and inclusion ,”to Princeton University. DEI initiatives have become prevalent in the application processes at elite schools, sparking fierce debate among those who question their effectiveness at eliminating discrimination.
Princeton professor Robert George cheered the move via X Tuesday, saying other schools should follow suit.. “The use of DEI statements in academic hiring and promotion is the thinly veiled imposition of ideological loyalty oaths. I hope other universities will swiftly follow MIT's good example by abolishing the use of such statements.”
While MIT is the first prestigious university to make such a move, other leading scholars are beginning to move away from DEI statements. Liberal Harvard professor Randall Kennedy in April called for diversity statements to be abolished,“It does not take much discernment to see, moreover, that the diversity statement regime leans heavily and tendentiously towards varieties of academic leftism and implicitly discourages candidates who harbor ideologically conservative dispositions,” he wrote.
