Researchers from Basel University and NCCR have made a major breakthrough that could lead to creation of million qubit chips.

Thanks to researchers at the University of Basel, Switzerland, and The National Center of Competence in Research SPIN, the first controllable two-hole spin qubit interaction on a conventional silicon transistor has been achieved.

To help overcome this, the Basel University and NCCR SPIN team have been working on solving the problem of arranging and linking thousands of these. The team turned to a qubit that uses an electron or a hole’s spin to do this. “Hole spins allow us to create two-qubit gates that are both fast and high-fidelity. This principle now also makes it possible to couple a larger number of qubit pairs,” explained team lead Dr. Andreas Kuhlmann. The coupling of two spin qubits is achieved through their exchange interaction, which happens when two indistinguishable particles interact electrostatically. Interestingly, the exchange energy of holes is not only electrically controllable but also strongly anisotropic.

However, the demonstration of a two-qubit interaction has remained an open challenge. One missing factor is an understanding of the exchange coupling in the presence of a strong spin–orbit interaction.
