A person walks past a pile of barricades at an encampment by students protesting against the Israel-Hamas war at George Washington University on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, in Washington. Mayor Muriel Bowser reiterated Monday that District police will not clear out an ongoing anti-Israel protest at George Washington University unless the demonstration becomes violent, rebuffing a plea for help from the school’s president and brushing off criticism from Capitol Hill.
Police have been called in to break up the college campus encampments around the country in recent days, but D.C. police officers remained stationed along the GWU camp’s perimeter. Ms. Granberg, the university’s president, dispelled any notion about the protest being completely peaceful in her Sunday letter.
Ms. Granberg said the university has started disciplining the GWU students who are participating, but without help from D.C. police, she said there’s little that can be done to end the encampment. In New York City, police arrested over 280 people who barricaded themselves inside a building on Columbia University’s campus. One of the reported leaders of Columbia’s camp said previously that people should “be grateful that I’m not just going out and murdering Zionists.”
