Fact Checker: Do Betsy DeVos’s Education Freedom Scholarships take money from public schools?

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos testifies before a congressional committee in March. By Salvador Rizzo Salvador Rizzo Reporter for The Fact Checker Email Bio Follow April 8 at 3:00 AM “Despite what some may try to tell you … Education Freedom Scholarships are privately funded and do not take any money from public schools.

But the individuals and businesses privately funding these scholarships would get a dollar-for-dollar tax credit under DeVos’s proposal. President Trump’s 2020 budget plan includes a $5 billion tax expenditure for these credits. “Because it is a tax credit, it will not divert a single dollar away from public schools or teachers,” the Education Department says.

“For the third year in a row, the president’s dead-on-arrival federal budget proposal prioritizes privatization, reverts to post-sequester spending levels, and underinvests in critical education supports and programs, threatening to revert trends in student attendance, graduation and performance,” said Noelle Ellerson Ng, associate executive director of the School Superintendents Association.

So, the Education Department is proposing to cut its own budget by $8.8 billion. Simultaneously, the Treasury Department is contemplating a $5 billion tax expenditure for the Education Freedom Scholarship credits that DeVos has made a priority. Meanwhile, the Education Department is justifying the proposed cuts to its budget in terms of “fiscal discipline” and “the President’s overall goal of increasing support for national security and public safety without adding to the Federal budget deficit.” DeVos and the Trump administration are choosing to fund the tax credits while choosing to cut the department’s programs.

Getting down to brass tacks, the federal government would be forgoing up to $5 billion in revenue to cover the cost of DeVos’s Education Freedom Scholarships. Private actors may be fronting this money with their donations, but they would get a dollar-for-dollar tax credit in return. That’s money that could have been put to another use, such as public schools or the military.

Public schools don’t need more money. These kids need to start learning. It doesn’t take an iPad to put 2+2 together.

I cannot stand her. So inept!!!!

A position that should be filled with the most qualified ONLY to be filled with the MOST EVIL AND UNQUALIFIED !!!

Good I hope so it don’t belong to them it belongs to where you want to go

When white people steal money

Private education is segregation. They don't have to accept any one they don't want to for any reason. Pay property tax and income tax .

Trump, DeVos, Koch’s are hell bent on destroying public education, The rich creating private schools, defunding schools across the nation. Tax payer $ to fund charter schools and religious institutions, Public debt, private profits, money laundering of mind-boggling proportions.

46

A new record broken in Trump Administration stupidity. It is only obvious when she takes a selfie.

The schools that are known for producing outstanding students don't do it on the cheap. When, or if, your local private or charter school that claims they can do it on the cheap has an open house, be sure to go! Take a look, ask questions inc if the teachers are certified .

Evil being. Like trump!

He'll yes! Devosit is only for the wealthy!

Hopefully. You don't reward failure

We need more creativity and competition in our education. We spend 10000 per student or more. Many private schools cost less and produce more. Plus, lowering the population of dome schools would improve them. Let’s not be afraid to change what doesn’t work

The Government should have NO ROLE in funding religious schools.

She should be next to go.

Wonder when she’s done

2020 can’t come soon enough

As it should. It's education money.

That’s one thing I could never understand, I am a home owner pay property taxes, which go to funding school in my state, but everyone whither you are a property owner or not gets to vote if my taxes should increase to fund schools or not.

Public schools have been failing for years. Chicago public schools are consistently the absolute worst & we pay the teachers an sverage of $76k a year. I had teachers who were barely literate & I needed 2 extra years of jr college to learn what I should have known.

A lot should lose funding for their non-positive impact on kids🙄👎🏻‼️

Apparently she like this kind of Socialism.

PolitiFact can you help with this

Yes, as does the unconstitutional Faith-Based Initiative (another GW fuckup). Taxpayer monies have been diverted away from public schools, in favor of private and/or religious schooling, for decades now. It is the root cause of the barbarism.

She needs to go!!

You mean ‘the spin zone’, right?

She's just creepy.

DeVos is so wrong for our education dept !! Resign

Someone give Betsy a grizzle to shoot

That woman is so stupid.

Look no further than what she did to her state. Horrible result

Public schools are a joke.

If the kid is going to a private school there is no reason the public school should continue to receive funding for that child

They should. Our public schools get way too much money and still fail miserably.
