by Kristen McPeek, KUTVent this week. ent this week.Chris Nelson, a spokesperson with the school, said they don’t want to see interruptions and want to support the graduates.“We are proceeding and planning as scheduled commencement on Thursday evening, and our college convocation on both Thursday and Friday,” Nelson said.
He said like any arena event, there will be security protocols in place. However, after Monday night's protests, they are planning for a little more security than usual. “Families should expect to see more police than they would normally see at a commencement," Nelson said. “Our goal is to try and avoid disruptions, keep everybody safe, and keep it about the graduates.”“There is a place and a time for free speech and protests, commencement is not one of those — but we look forward to hosting people on campus and other venues to do that," he said.“I don’t really think so, I think the protests are intended to be peaceful,” said student Miriam Logan.
“People are protesting for a reason,” Ingargiloa added. “I don’t feel like any particular way about it, but I feel like they should be listened to, to some degree” The university said like all big events, no bags are allowed unless they are clear and no signs on sticks will be allowed.
