79 people were arrested at the University of Texas following a large pro-Palestinian rally, with most charged with criminal trespass and a few facing additional charges of obstructing a highway or interfering with public duties.
Less than a week after more than 50 people were arrested at a pro-Palestinian rally at the University of Texas, an even larger group -- a total of 79 people -- was brought to the Travis County Jailwith the end of diversity, equity and inclusion programs at the University of Texas. But the pro-Palestinian rally grew much larger and law enforcement stepped in to break up the group.
Last week the police response appeared to be primarily Texas DPS Troopers, this time more local law enforcement agencies appeared to be involved. Some students questioned the size of the response since no violence or damage was reported by the University of Texas. Student Sal Hussain commented, “I have seven friends who were put in jail last week. I have three friends who were pepper-sprayed today, and all of us are fairly educated, fairly peaceful kids so it was a little insane.
Last week most of the people arrested during the first pro-Palestinian demonstration were charged with criminal trespass. They allegedly had been told to disperse and refused to do so. All of those charges were dismissed by local prosecutors. A Travis County Sheriff's Office spokesperson said on Tuesday morning that 78 of the people arrested are charged with criminal trespass. One of them has an additional charge of obstructing a highway or passageway. And one of the people arrested is charged with interfering with public duties.
