) - One state lawmaker is looking to amend a previous law that bans immigrants lacking permanent legal status from attending college in Alabama.would allow some immigrants who enter the country illegally to attend Alabama universities if they have attended high school for three or more years and graduated, earned a GED, or completed an equivalent education. They would also qualify if they’ve already applied for lawful presence in the United States.
“We’ve got some that have become nurses and left the state of Alabama and gone to other states to become that and they’ve applied for legal status,” Reed said. “We’re not talking about the ones that just came over the border. Reed added that he wants to make it clear this amendment is for immigrants who want to become citizens and contribute to the state’s economy.
