Sat, April 27th 2024 at 7:03 PMALBANY, NY —The governor was at the Albany School of Humanities to see the philosophy in action, as it's a technique Albany city schools have embraced since 2016, and it's showing. The governor says 67 percent of third graders at the school are proficient in English language arts, where the statewide average is 45 percent.

“Three weeks into the school year this fall 87 percent of our kindergarteners scored proficient on that measure, they were able to break words into individual sounds, a direct correlation of what this new program is teaching and the results student are experiencing. There may be some teachers that have a sense of it, they're ready to go, it's a series of strategies. It’s not just one book that says teach this, it's a series of strategies to have them incorporate into the curriculum.

The governor says they're also sending teachers for training at SUNY New Paltz, which is one of the only schools in the nation with a
