After the Boston Globe reported on an unusual home sale and the admission of a student athlete, a Harvard University dean said the allegations are being taken seriously and that an independent review has been launched.

Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass. By Susan Svrluga Susan Svrluga Reporter covering higher education for the Grade Point blog Email Bio Follow April 4 at 8:41 PM Harvard University has launched an investigation after the Boston Globe reported that the school’s legendary fencing coach received almost double the asking price for his suburban home from a Maryland businessman not long before the man’s son was admitted to the school.

The allegations that came to light Thursday in the newspaper report appear to be unrelated to the national scandal, according to a Harvard University official. The allegation this week involves one coach and transactions related to one family, Gay noted. “I say this not to minimize the concerns that this allegation raises. I take them very seriously,” she wrote. “Instead, I want to ensure that we consider them in the appropriate context.”

Gay noted the allegations naturally raise questions about Harvard’s recruitment practices for student-athletes, and how those compare with other universities. Harvard’s process is distinct in two ways, she wrote: Applications of all recruited student-athletes are reviewed and voted on by the full admissions committee of about 40 people. And all recruited student-athletes must be interviewed by an admissions officer or alumni interviewer.

...but one hand washes the other right?...

When I, a normal, hard-working, honest guy of modest means, see all of this corruption and how deep it runs in our society, all I can do is shake-my-damned-head and wonder WTF?

Me thinks the whole Harvard brand should be devalued. Bigly.

Oh this is a big deal, but screwing over Asians and poorer white kids in Admissions, no big deal harvard ?

It’s funny bc fencing is a sport but also a crime I think one of their alums also got drunk and killed a girl!
