6:19 PM EDT April 25, 2024Wednesday night, State Representative, Angie Nixon, posted on X, saying the district would be making what she called"massive" teacher cuts. Duval Teachers United said it's also heard cuts are coming.
The union representing DCPS teachers says the cuts will impact employees at district locations and in individual schools. DTU President, Tammie Brooks-Evans, said she is hearing 11% of district positions and 6% of school posts could be cut.She said district positions include employees at DCPS headquarters and other satellite locations. Brooks-Evans said the district plans to reassign employees to open positions but said the employee's previous positions would be cut.
“My concern with these types of cuts is what will happen to the work that needs to be done, the work we need to have done at the district level, the work that we need for working with our children having the right people in place," Brooks-Evans said. cuts are common every budget cycle. But he said no number has been set because the board is still working through the budget.
