The inaugural Somerset Cup saw 12 schools compete on Monday night.

Rising football stars were given the chance to grace the turf at Ayr United's Somerset Park as part of a new initiative to grow the game.

Grant Paterson, chair of the Ayr & District Schools' FA, told the Ayrshire Post: "When accepting this role, I set quite a few targets. One being, to arrange a new and exciting annual tournament with Ayr United. I felt this would help bring our schools’ communities closer together, and also to provide our school children with an experience of a lifetime; to play at one of Scotland’s most famous grounds.

"On Monday we achieved this target. For me, this was two years in the making. Our FA committee planned, organised and ran this event, working alongside Graeme Mathie, Ayr United's managing director. We had 12 schools that took part to compete in our newest, biggest and most prestigious tournament. A three cup tournament saw Troon crowned the Somerset Cup champions, Glenburn took the Somerset Shield and Annbank won the Somerset Salver.
