University of Maryland students stage sit-in for Gaza, joining nationwide protests

Organizers said they began a “sit-in” Monday in an area near Campus Drive and outside of Hornbake Library on the College Park campus.to divest itself of investments in companies

They also said they are protesting in solidarity with students at Columbia University in New York City, where more than a hundred demonstrators were arrested last week after camping on the campus.Wednesday afternoon dozens of students sat on the ground as part of the protest. Unlike at some other protests throughout the country, things were entirely peaceful and no one was attempting to camp out.

A spokesperson for the University of Maryland did not comment on the divestment issue or whether UMD has money invested in Lockheed Martin, but said in an email that the university has “seen no disruption to campus operations.” “This week, individuals participated in expressive activity in two public spaces at the University of Maryland campus. Both were authorized areas for free speech and assembly. There are no encampments,” the spokesperson added.

This comes as the death toll in Gaza surpasses 34,000, with over 76,901 wounded, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
