The Alabama House of Representatives passed a bill to expand the state's ban on classroom instruction and discussion about sexual orientation and gender identity in a manner that isn't age or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards.
Another amendment was accepted to provide that any entity or organization teaching K-8th students that takes funds from the Education Trust Fund would be subject to the prohibition. HB 130 is sponsored by Representative Mack Butler, R- Rainbow City. He believed there's an attempt to "indoctrinate" children. He said the discussion about sexual orientation and gender identity should happen at home.Several Democratic lawmakers spoke against the legislation. They expressed concern about the negative impact it could have on the mental health of students.
"I don't believe that would be the case whatsoever. You would still be able to go to your teacher and talk to your teacher. You wouldn't be able to raise your hand and have an open discussion about what you are going through which I doubt that would be what happened anyway," said Butler.
