Worried parents claimed a school run "could have ended in tragedy" after their children were let out while a man with a 'gun' was on the loose.
A police helicopter was also heard by parents hovering over both St James' and Newfold Community Primary School. However, worried parents have claimed they feel failed by Greater Manchester Police following Monday's incident, as students from Up Holland High School were allowed to leave the premises at 3pm.
Sarah said: "The first I knew about it was a text from my daughter asking why there was a helicopter above her school and asked what kind it was. I looked and I text her back and said it's the police. She sent me a photo of it and then a text that said 'someone has a gun.' "She has not gone to school today because she is traumatised. It was a terrifying feeling, I can't explain how I felt when I got that text. Her sister was poorly at home so I couldn't get to her. I just knew I needed to get her out of the area. I told her 'get out of the area' and thankfully she did, it could have been so much worse.
One mum, Alison, 36, who has a 14-year-old daughter in year 9, said: "I have two children, one of which is a student in Upholland High School, she walks home alone and was pretty oblivious to the scenes around her, but this to me can show a higher level of vulnerability that some children weren’t even aware of the dangers surrounding them.
“We advised schools not to release their students for a short period of time which they assisted with. A complete lockdown was not necessary at that point due to the suspect having fled from the scene back to the Skelmersdale area.
