The House Judiciary Committee will hear public testimony Wednesday over a constitutional amendment proposal to allow public funds to be used for religious and private school expenses.

JUNEAU, Alaska - Last week, Gov. Mike Dunleavy called a potential constitutional amendment a “hypothetical” fix for homeschool reimbursement questions, but now lawmakers are moving forward with a hearing.

That would require approval from two-thirds of lawmakers in a joint session before going to voters in the next general election. “I chose to introduce this amendment as kind of a working document as a start of a long term conversation,” Vance said. “I do not want to have any false expectation that the legislature would pass this in the next month. Am I hopeful that it will be considered I am, but really, the courts and the administration are working on the immediate solution to help our families..
