The district said it doesn’t believe there was any “nefarious intent,” but said the substitute removed from Johnson High School will not be invited back.

A substitute teacher at Hays Consolidated Independent School District was removed from campus last week after reportedly asking students to recreate a murder scene with puppets. The exact nature of the resulting classroom drama remained a mystery even after a day of investigating. But the teacher was out of a job.

One group of students told staff that their performance would have involved a mass shooting, but the district said it was “not clear if that was the specific assignment or a scene created to meet the parameters of the assignment.” In an update provided Monday morning, Hays CISD said it met with the teacher and still hadn't clarified exactly what the assignment entailed.
