Some Ontario school boards have written to the education minister with concerns that planned increases to class sizes will mean they can offer fewer elective courses, such as in the arts and skilled trades.

Lisa Thompson announced last month that average high school class sizes will increase by six students -- from 22 to 28 -- a change to be phased in over four years.

School boards in Peel region, Toronto and eastern Ontario wrote to the minister with concerns about the move. They say increased class sizes will mean fewer teachers will be needed in schools and that will put some programs that schools currently offer in jeopardy. Thompson says larger class sizes won't make a difference to students, rather the quality of the teacher is what matters.

Students are planning a walkout Thursday to protest Thompson's education changes, including class sizes.

This move will backfire. They are not looking at the big picture. Classes of 40 students will have higher failure rates as at risk students will not be able to get help due to large volume.

Parents don't want to take the place of teachers for 1/4 of the day to ensure their 14 year olds are doing their new mandatory E-courses! Kids need more time in their schools/classroom gaining structure. Not off by themselves staring at screens more! Listen to parents PCs onpoli

LisaThompsonMPP has no idea what she is doing as Education Minister. She has no background in the system. Ford showed really poor judgement picking this person. The PC's are trying to pull a fast one on parents by making 1 course each year a 'at home e-learning course'.

This just sounds worse and worse . GOING BACKWARDS

Who cares, its just daycare anyways. 12 years and all you're qualified for is Walmart greeter.

Some teachers teach across disciplines.

This is all to increase the number of private schools which will help the rich buddies

How about they provide evidence of these claims because it makes no sense. The teachers who teach the arts don't teach Math or history. They may have a couple of more students in each of these classes. So how does that explain them losing teachers?
