Alleged shooter at Wilmer-Hutchins High School used revolver handgun, arrest warrant affidavit shows

The suspected shooter is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and unlawful carrying of a weapon in a prohibited place, records show.The alleged shooter, 17-year-old Ja’kerian Rhodes-Ewing, fled the school after the shooting and was later taken into custody on Langdon Road adjacent to the Wilmer Hutchins Athletic Stadium, according to the affidavit.

Rhodes-Ewing is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and unlawful carrying of a weapon in a prohibited place. Rhodes-Ewing was booked into the Dallas County Jail Friday afternoon and remained in custody Tuesday afternoon with a total bond amount of $200,000, jail records show.An officer wrote in the affidavit that he responded to a classroom at the high school after hearing “what appeared to be the sound of gunfire.”

The officer found the student who’d been shot in the left thigh and applied a tourniquet to the student’s leg until other first responders arrived, according to the affidavit. A witness told police he “directed the suspect out of the classroom and out the building to prevent further harm to the victim and others,” the affidavit states.Monday, calling on district and state officials to do more to protect them.
