Samantha Havener, an Elgin High School senior, was one of four students lauded by the District U-46 School Board for being a National Merit Scholarship finalist. Havener was also acknowledged for participating in the district’s dual credit program through which she attends Elgin Community College full time while simultaneously earning college and high school credit.

“The U-46 students placed among the top 1 percent of juniors nationwide who entered the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2022 PSAT, which served as the initial screening,” the release said. “They advanced to the finals based on their academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received.

Wildermuth was named adult volunteer of the year and the church, located at 12N462 Tina Trail, was named service organization of the year, according to a township news release.Elgin’s DNA coordinating several spring clean-up events in April9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily through Friday, April 19. Volunteers can drop by the DNA office, 31 S. Grove Ave., to pick up supplies and will receive $10 DNA gift certificates.9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 20 outside St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 397 Fulton St.
