The bill would attempt to address an issue fundamental to how Uber and Lyft function. Whereas taxi cabs are required to be painted certain colors or have noticeable markings, the appeal of ride-share apps is that drivers can use their own vehicle to make money. On Tuesday, South Carolina Rep. Seth Rose and co-sponsor Rep. Micah Caskey plan to file the"Samantha L. Josephson Ridesharing Safety Act" bill to make it easier for riders to identify Uber and Lyft vehicles.
Man mistaken for Uber driver charged in student's death 01:09Read MoreThe ride-share apps have a number of safety features that provide checks for riders so that they don't get into the wrong vehicle, as happened to Josephson. For example, the Uber app informs the rider of the make, model and color of the vehicle, the license plate number and the driver's name and photo.
They should require live cameras in all their cars. It helps both driver and passenger. A stupid sign won't do
Don’t those already exist? Know you, taxis
Great idea. Just like they have on NY cabs
Cheap rides aren’t really cheap.
USC students should be required to wear illuminated signs that states: 1) They are not drunk, 2) Their parents didn’t fraudulently get them into the school.
this is my worst fear. In PA, license plates are only on the back of cars and Uber signs can be difficult to see (and not all even have them). It’s scary to admit that I haven’t always checked the license plate bc of the placement. Hopefully something can come from this tragedy
Because the bad guys refuse to use neon signs?
She should have stay with her friends who have a car not ride with stranger whose don't have as Uber. 🤷🏿♂️😔
Couldn’t murderers just buy a sign?
Ultimately, it was up to her to make a judgement in her real life sitch. Trust barely anyone.
Punish Nathaniel Rowland.
I don't understand why some people are against the death penalty when there are criminals like this garbage walking the earth.
Any time you order an Uber or Lyft, you receive all the info you need to identify the driver. Taking the time to verify the info before entering the vehicle can be life saving. That said, always be aware of stranger danger!
the fact that ride sharing like uber is so common and hitchhikers are rare. the predator in me says this driver was betting on her mistake.
vandacapri If you’re a Women, Buy A Gun It’s A Lot Safer, and you’re in Control.
Why do we always do something AFTER a tragedy?
Should of been a law from day 1
False security - sadly:( Sounds good, but NOT a great solution! Riders will only look for the sign (may not be legit) and not do due diligence to stay safe.
Lyft does this already...... some hard hitting legislation right there.
The story is tragic. The response is silly. Uber gives the passenger the plate number, this is an excellent security measure. Uber has saved thousands of lives and reduced drunk driving. Those illuminated signs are available to anyone who wants them. Could be used to deceive.
😢
Stop trying to stop Darwin,we need Darwin
YahairaSauceda mira animalito
I think i'm okay with that. Lyft was doing that for a tiny bit -sporadically in Cali. Broken over the loss of the USC student.
Atleast, the ride sharing vehicles should have their license plates (with the numbers) both in front and back of the vehicles. Often, it is difficult to identify and approaching vehicle correctly as there's no way to check their license plate from front. Isn't it common sense?
Good job👍
This was a horrible mistake. The Uber protocols are in place. We do not need to legislate a sign outside car. We need PSA on campuses to remind students to confirm, verify and ask, “ who are you picking up.”
Why did he kill her ? wtf mental health crisis is real in America
There must be strong rules in this regard.
She must have been super drunk to get in car that didn't match all the info you get. License plate. Car make and model. Photo of driver. How does that even happen?
what a beautiful girl 😐 aaaw I hope she will rest in peace 😐😐😐😑😑😐
WhiteLivesMatter
There are already police officers stopping drivers to ticket them for this in Southern California even though it isn't a law here.
So, like regular taxis then, except with 75% more slave labor.
Ahem... USC = The University of Southern California.
wait...you mean there was a reason for all those rules for taxi's? who knew?
. Unfortunately, despite further regulations, informative warnings, and increased safety awareness...innocents will STILL fall prey to evil. UberDriver
Good job sc.
so what keeps people from putting illuminated signs in their car and doing it anyway? dont get in a car that you dont know who the driver is
