Neighbors in one Ashtabula County township tried to block a slaughterhouse from coming to their neighborhood, but on Monday the zoning board approved a commercial zoning variance to allow the poultry processing plant to open up in Saybrook Township.

ASHTABULA COUNTY, Ohio - “With the school, with the churches and a bunch of residents that are in that area it’s not the right area period,” said Saybrook Township resident Michael Carlo.

The chicken and turkey processing plant will be built on Depot Road. Many people said a slaughterhouse doesn’t belong a few doors down from a place where children learn. St. John’s pre-k through 12th-grade catholic school is just a stone’s throw away. The Buck family is behind the proposal. They say they invested too much in this to not see it through.
