New York Mayor Bill de Blasio won an extension of control over city schools that will last through the end of his term

New York state’s new budget deal grants Mayor Bill de Blasio his wish for a three-year extension of control over New York City schools, but some education advocates said Monday that parents should have been given more power.

The deal tweaks the system by adding one parent representative and one additional mayoral appointee to the Panel for Educational Policy, which votes on contracts, school closures and major changes in the use of district buildings.
