by Kaigan Bigler, KUTVA high school student was taken into custody after being found with a gun that he claimed was "for protection."
Police officials said on Thursday at about 12:30 p.m., the school resource officer at Roy High School received a tip that there was a student with a handgun at the school. The officer responded to the 15-year-old boy's classroom and pulled him out, police said. The officer located the gun "containing" ammunition in the waistband of the student's pants.
When police interviewed the boy and his parents, the teen claimed he took the firearm from his father's locked gun safe in order to protect himself, officials said. The interview revealed that the firearm possession may have been connected to a gang situation.Police said they took the teen into custody at Weber Valley Detention on gun related charges.
"Our top priority is the safety of your Children, Teachers and Staff and maintaining a safe environment to learn and educate," Roy Police Department officials said.
